A classic 1980s film is reportedly set for a sequel over 40 years after its release – and with stars from the original cast set to return.
The Goonies is a hugely popular film from its time, filled with nostalgia for its fans thanks to its storyline that sees a group of kids hanging around in their neighbourhood discover a treasure map, sparking a grand adventure.
Now, according to a source, a ‘green light’ has been given to proceed with a sequel, which could start shooting as early as next summer with an aim to hit cinemas by 2026 or 2027.
In 1985, the original was written by Harry Potter and Home Alone director Chris Columbus, directed by Richard Donner and produced by Steven Spielberg.
It starred a host of young talent who went on to big roles in their adult careers, including Sean Astin, Josh Brolin and Oscar-winner Ke Huy Quan, all of whom we could see return to their Goonies roles.
‘The Gooniesreboot has been talked about for a long time, but it’s finally been given the green light to go ahead,’ an insider revealed according to The Sun.
Apparently, ‘the plan is to start developing the ideas for the follow up next summer, with a possible release date of 2026 or 2027’.
‘The original is so culturally significant, Warner Bros know they have to get it totally right,’ they added.
It’s also described as ‘likely major stars will come back’, while the possibilities of where to go with the sequel in terms of story are ‘endless’.

The production team behind the supposed sequel is also said to be ‘excited’ at the chance to ‘bring the magic of the film to a whole new audience’.
In the original, which grossed $125 million (£95m) worldwide on a budget of just $19m (£14.4m), its central kids live in the ‘Goon Docks’ neighbourhood of Astoria, Oregon.
While on a mission to save their homes from the threat of foreclosure, they discover an old map in the attic of one of their houses.
It leads them on an adventure to unearth the long-lost fortune of legendary 17th-centurypirate One-Eyed Willy – but they also have criminals in pursuit who want the treasure for themselves.
The cast included Astin as Mikey, leader of the Goonies, Brolin as his older brother Brand and Corey Feldman as Mouth.
Quan played everyone’s favourite geek Data, while Jeff Cohen was Laurence ‘Chunk’ Cohen.
Martha Plimpton, Kerri Green and Anne Ramsey also featured, with former NFL star John Matuszak as Sloth, the gentle giant and disfigured son of the criminal Fratelli family.
Many of the original movie’s cast – who reunited for the 35th anniversary – are still acting, adding further popular credits to their CVs.
Astin, 53, went on to appear as Sam in the award-winning Lord of the Rings trilogy, as well as memorable supporting turn in Adam Sandler and Drew Barrymore rom-com 50 First Dates.
More recently, he also cropped up as Bob Newby in Netflix hit TV show Stranger Things.
Brolin, 56, has been cast as Thanos in Marvel’s Avengers films, as well as appearing in films including No Country for Old Men and both parts of Denis Villeneuve’s new adaptation of Dune, starring Timothée Chalamet.
In 2023, Indiana Jones star Quan – also 53 – was crowned best supporting actor at the Academy Awards for his performance in Everything Everywhere All at Once, after 20 years away from being in front of the camera.
While Cohen, 50, has since become a successful entertainment lawyer, 53-year-old Feldman went on to appear in further 80s films like Stand By Me and The Lost Boys ahead of forays into music and reality TV.
Sadly, Matuszak died aged 38 in 1989 of an accidental overdose, after filming further onscreen appearances in the likes of The A-Team, Miami Vice, The Fall Guy and posthumously released film Down the Drain.
